That is the question. Changing the multimedia setting as you described did the trick! Hope this helps someone. My desktop would not enter sleep mode in Ubuntu, although it did hibernate; Vista, however, slept and woke up without a hitch.
It was both my (1) mouse and (2) Vista's dumb multimedia sharing option.Mouse: Easy solution (often posted elsewhere).
